Data Supporting the Value of Workplace Immunization

Adults experience higher rates of vaccine-preventable illness than children, resulting in more missed workdays and decreased productivity. Illnesses like influenza, shingles and pneumonia often lead to missed workdays, reduced productivity and increased strain on health benefits and staffing.

With many adult vaccines not publicly funded, gaps in coverage leave a large portion of the workforce vulnerable. A survey completed in 2023 by Praxus Health found that 73 per cent of Canadians believe adult vaccines should be publicly funded, reflecting a clear consensus on the need for better access.

Without adequate coverage, vaccine-preventable illnesses can weaken organizational performance and drive up costs.

Vaccination isn’t just good for health—it’s good for business. Studies show that adult immunization programs reduce healthcare costs, lower absenteeism and contribute to a stronger, more productive economy. 

Employers have a powerful opportunity to make a difference. By supporting workplace vaccination programs, organizations can protect employee health, strengthen their teams and unlock measurable value for both the healthcare system and the broader economy. 

In 2024, Praxus Health, on behalf of the Adult Vaccination Alliance (AVA), commissioned IQVIA Canada—a global leader in health data and analytics—to develop a report highlighting the unmet value of vaccines in Canada. The report findings included:

What employers can do

Workplace vaccination programs and improved access to vaccines are among the most reliable and cost-effective preventive health measures employers can invest in. By helping to remove common barriers—like cost, access and awareness—employers play a key role in improving adult vaccine uptake.

Employers can support adult vaccination in the workplace through:

  • Education: Provide trusted information on the safety, effectiveness, and benefits of adult vaccines. Share resources in the workplace and offer materials employees can take home to discuss with their families.
  • Communication: Clearly communicate what vaccines are covered through employee health benefits. Make it easy for employees to understand what’s available and how to access it.
  • Access: Make getting vaccinated easier by offering on-site clinics or partnering with nearby providers. Consider extending access to employees’ family members to further increase uptake.
